How To Wear A Saree

What is a Saree?

A saree is a traditional Indian garment for women, consisting of a long piece of fabric, typically around six to nine yards, that is wrapped around the body in various styles. It is usually paired with a blouse and a petticoat.

Step 1: Tying the Petticoat

  • How to Wear the Petticoat Correctly: Tie it firmly around your waist, just above the navel.

Step 2: Tucking the Saree

  • Starting Point: Hold the saree's plain end.
  • Making the First Tuck: Tuck the end into the petticoat at the right side of your waist and wrap it around once, tucking it in as you go.

Step 3: Creating Pleats

  • Number of Pleats: Aim for about 5-7 pleats, each about 5 inches wide.
  • How to Pleat Perfectly: Gather the pleats together and align them, then tuck them into the petticoat slightly to the left of the navel.

Step 4: Draping the Pallu

  • Different Styles of Draping: The most common is the Nivi style, where the pallu (the decorative end of the saree) is draped over the left shoulder.
  • Ensuring the Pallu Length is Correct: Adjust it so it falls just below your knees.

Step 5: Securing the Saree

  • Using Safety Pins: Pin the pleats and the pallu to ensure they stay in place.
  • Adjusting the Saree for Comfort: Make sure the saree is not too tight or too loose.

Product FAQ

What's Stopping You from Embracing the Elegance of a Saree Today?

Is the saree appropriate to wear at a wedding?

What colors should I avoid to be respectful?

What type of saree fabric is suitable for me?

Sarees come in a variety of fabrics like silk, cotton, georgette, and chiffon, each with a unique feel and drape. If you’re unfamiliar with sarees, choose fabrics based on climate, ease of wearing, and the occasion. Lightweight fabrics like georgette and chiffon are easier to handle for beginners. Read our style guide for complete information on Sarees.

What is the saree's length and width?

Most sarees are about 5 to 6 yards long, but some may vary. Make sure the length is adequate for your height, as saree draping can differ based on length and personal preference. Width can also influence how the saree fits across the shoulders and body.

Is a blouse included, and is it customizable?

Many sarees come with a matching blouse piece, but it might not always be stitched or tailored. Confirm if it’s ready-to-wear or requires customization to ensure it fits well. Also, check if a petticoat (underskirt) is included.

How do I care for and maintain this saree

Different fabrics require specific care. Some sarees might be machine washable, while others, like silk, need dry cleaning. Understanding maintenance helps you keep the saree in good condition for future wear.
